Race Description

The full Rye Ancient Trails route takes in around 1,500 feet of climbing across 30 kilometres of the High Weald countryside around Rye, linking the Norman churches of Iden, Beckley, Northiam and Peasmarsh on a demanding multi-terrain course of footpaths, bridleways, gates and stiles. It's a genuinely testing undertaking rather than a runnable trail loop - the terrain, navigation and repeated climbs make it closer to a mountain-marathon-style challenge than a standard road ultra, and it rewards trail experience and hill strength over raw speed.

As with the shorter 15k option that shares the same course before turning back at Peasmarsh, the race supports the Oliver Curd Trust, which provides free holiday breaks for families affected by childhood cancer and other serious conditions, so the effort goes towards a tangible local cause. The route's appeal lies as much in what it passes through as the distance itself: ancient woodland, sunken lanes and small Wealden churches that most runners would otherwise never see, all within the High Weald's protected landscape between Rye and the Kent border.

Starting and finishing near the medieval town of Rye, with its cobbled streets and views over Romney Marsh, adds a memorable bookend to a long day on unfamiliar trails. It suits experienced trail and ultra runners looking for a genuinely tough, scenic English challenge rather than a fast-finish race, and anyone wanting to combine serious distance with real off-road technicality.
