Race Description

Betteshanger Country Park, just outside Deal, was built on the spoil heap of what was once the largest of Kent's coalfield collieries, employing well over 2,000 people before it closed in 1989; the land was regenerated in the 2000s into a 200-acre park with a mining heritage museum on site, and it's the park's wide, traffic-free tarmac paths that host this festive road race. Held in December, the event offers a fast, flat five-mile route over two laps of the park, alongside a shorter fun run and a junior race, and its position just before Christmas has made it a popular target for runners hoping to bank a fast time before the holiday break gets in the way of training.

Because the whole course sits on old colliery land reshaped into cycling and walking paths, it's pancake flat by regional standards, with only minimal climbing throughout, which suits the PB-hunting crowd particularly well. The race supports charitable causes each year - past editions have raised money for homelessness charities - giving the event a fundraising dimension beyond its running credentials.
