Run along Hove's seafront and based at Hove Lagoon, this is about as fast and flat as 10ks on the Sussex coast get - two accurately measured laps of the promenade with barely any elevation change, which is exactly why so many runners target it specifically for a personal best. It's organised by Arena 80 Athletics Club, self-styled as Brighton and Hove's friendliest running club, who have been putting the race on for well over a decade and treat it as their signature event of the year.
As part of the Sussex Grand Prix series it draws a strong field of competitive club runners chasing points, but the flat course and sea views also make it accessible and appealing to less experienced runners hoping to break a time barrier for the first time. The route runs along the promenade with the Channel on one side and Hove's seafront gardens and beach huts on the other, giving it a different character to inland 10ks in the county - open, breezy and exposed to the weather in a way that can work for or against a fast time depending on the wind off the sea.
Recent editions have supported Sussex-based charities working with families of children with special educational needs, adding a local charitable dimension to what is primarily known as a serious racing occasion. It suits PB hunters and Grand Prix regulars above all, though the coastal scenery and relaxed Hove setting mean it works just as well as a scenic season opener for less competitive runners too.
