Race Description

Organised by the Rotary Club of Folkestone, this half marathon has one of the more dramatic openings of any race in Kent: starting on the Leas, Folkestone's grand Victorian clifftop promenade, the course drops steeply down the Road of Remembrance, a war memorial road built in the 1920s linking the clifftop to the harbour below, before settling into a flatter rhythm through the coastal park and out towards Hythe and back. That early descent, and the equivalent climb waiting on the return, gives the race real character among the otherwise mostly flat, promenade-based half marathons along this coast, and it's become something of a signature feature for regulars, even though recent landslips affected the Road of Remembrance and forced organisers to adapt the route for a couple of years running.

Once past that opening test, the bulk of the course is genuinely fast, flat coastal running with the sea in view for long stretches, which is why it still attracts runners with real PB ambitions despite the hilly start. Race HQ sits at The Grand on the Leas itself, giving the event a slightly grander backdrop than the average half marathon start line, with mile markers and full marshalling throughout, plus lead and tail cyclists shepherding the field. Held in late September, it works well both as a stand-alone target and as an early-autumn marathon tune-up, and its long-standing Rotary organisation gives it a community feel that has helped it become one of the established fixtures on the Kent running calendar.
