Race Description

The BBB10k takes its runners through one of the most historically loaded start-and-finish settings in English road racing: Battle Abbey, built on the orders of William the Conqueror on the very ground where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066. From Abbey Green on Battle's High Street, the September course heads out through the town's timber-framed streets and into the surrounding villages of 1066 Country before an undulating return leg brings runners back past the Abbey gatehouse to finish. With around 117 metres of climbing across the ten kilometres, it's a course that rewards even pacing rather than raw speed, testing enough to satisfy experienced club runners but forgiving enough for first-timers tackling the distance.

The race's proceeds support the Battel Bonfire Boyes, the historic society behind the town's famous bonfire and fireworks night, one of the oldest and most fiercely defended traditions in Sussex, which gives the event a genuine sense of local identity rather than just borrowed scenery. A closed-road junior race runs alongside the main event, making it a popular family outing as well as a serious fixture on the Sussex calendar. Runners who've done it before talk about the atmosphere as much as the course: narrow historic streets lined with supporters, and a finish that feels genuinely special given what's around you.
