Long before it was a race, this stretch of high Sussex countryside was a stop on the 1066 Country Walk, and the route leans into that history from the gun — the first three kilometres trace the Walk itself, running straight past the Bayeux Tapestry-inspired Farbanks Henge sculptures, a set of modern standing stones built to echo the story of the Norman Conquest.
From there the course drops into quieter territory, threading through the scattered hamlets of Little and Great Maxfield on mostly off-road tracks and field paths — 82% trail in total, with just enough tarmac to link the sections together. It's a rolling rather than brutal profile (133m of gain over 7.5km), the kind of course that rewards steady effort over any one big climb, and it finishes back in the village near The Plough, making the pub the natural spot to compare notes afterwards.
Run twice a year on the same course — once in late July, once on the Sunday after Christmas — it's become one of the more sociable fixtures on the 1066 calendar, equally suited to a summer evening effort or blowing off the cobwebs between Christmas and New Year.
