Race Description

Organised by Tunbridge Wells Harriers and run continuously for well over forty years, this February half marathon starts and finishes at the Fusion Sports Centre and takes a single closed-road lap out into the Kent countryside around the town. It's an honest, undulating course rather than a flat one, and its defining feature is the climb up Spring Hill in nearby Fordcombe - a roughly 300-foot ascent that's become the race's talking point and the moment where the field visibly thins out.

With around 276 metres of total climbing across the 13.1 miles, this isn't a PB course for most runners, but that's rather the point: it rewards genuine hill strength and pacing discipline, and finishing it in winter conditions carries its own satisfaction. The closed-road format means no traffic worries despite the rural setting, and the long club history behind the event gives it a settled, well-run feel - marshals and route knowledge built up over decades rather than a first-time operation finding its feet.

It suits runners looking for a proper winter hill session dressed up as a race, or those training for a spring marathon who want early-season climbing practice before the flat courses of April and May. The Wealden scenery around Fordcombe and the High Weald more generally is genuinely attractive, if you have the spare breath to notice it on the way up Spring Hill, making this one of the more characterful half marathons on the Kent winter calendar.
