Race Description

Hastings Runners' flagship event, run in memory of former club member Keith Chandler, has grown over roughly two decades into one of the best-attended races on the Sussex Grand Prix calendar, regularly pulling several hundred runners from clubs across the south east. The course starts and finishes at Hastings Town Hall and stays almost entirely on the seafront, flat and fast by Sussex standards, with a distinctive early loop of the town's historic pier thrown into the mix - a genuinely unusual feature that gives the race a stronger sense of place than most flat coastal fives.

Since it began, the event has raised more than £80,000 for St Michael's Hospice, and that charitable thread, combined with the memorial naming, gives the race real local meaning beyond the results sheet; regulars talk about it as much for its atmosphere and history as for its times. Being part of the Sussex Grand Prix series means it draws a genuinely competitive club field chasing series points, so pacing yourself against strong local runners is part of the appeal, but the flat seafront profile also makes it a legitimate five-mile PB opportunity for anyone in decent form.

With entries capped in recent years to keep the seafront course manageable, it's worth booking early. Between the pier loop, the town hall start and the hospice connection, this is a race with more identity than a generic seaside five - a proper club institution rather than just another date on the calendar.
