Now well into its fourth decade, the Southend Half Marathon starts and finishes on East Beach at Shoeburyness and sends well over two thousand runners out along a two-lap, largely traffic-free course that hugs the Thames Estuary coastline through the historic Garrison and on to Southend's seafront and the Sealife Centre. It's flat, fast and about as scenic as road racing gets in Essex, with sea views for most of the route and a genuinely lively crowd along the prom - this is a race that has sold out well in advance in recent years, so early entry matters.
The course's flatness makes it a legitimate PB target for anyone who prefers tarmac to trail, while the estuary breeze and out-and-back sections give it enough character to avoid feeling like a generic road loop. What really distinguishes it, though, is what it's built for: it's the flagship fundraising event for Havens Hospices, the Essex charity behind Fair Havens and Little Havens, and over three decades the race has generated well over a million pounds for hospice care in the region. Runners who don't fancy taking a start line but still want to be part of race day can volunteer instead, which says something about how embedded this event has become in the local sporting calendar.
Between the Garrison's military history, the seafront setting and decades of charitable purpose behind it, this is a half marathon with genuine local weight, not just a number on the entry list.
