Run from The Point at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, this is a four-race summer series rather than a one-off event, with a race on the first Friday of June, July, August and September giving regulars a chance to track their form across the summer. The reserve itself is the real draw: a rare, largely untouched landscape of shingle ridges, saltmarsh, grazing marsh, reedbeds and saline lagoons stretching out towards the sea, home to breeding terns and other coastal birdlife found in few other places on the Sussex coast.
The course is flat and run on tarmac paths through this open, exposed terrain, which makes it a genuine PB opportunity on a still evening - though the same openness means a stiff sea breeze can just as easily turn a fast course into a tough one, so times vary noticeably from race to race. Held on Friday evenings rather than weekend mornings, it has a relaxed, after-work feel, with entrants able to buy into the full series or drop in for a single race.
Rye's medieval town, visible across the marsh, and the working harbour add character to a start/finish area that's otherwise refreshingly free of clutter - no road closures, no traffic, just reserve, sky and sea. It suits time-focused runners looking for a fast, flat course with a fair chance of a good day, as well as anyone who simply enjoys running somewhere genuinely wild for a summer evening.
