Hadleigh Legacy 10k Trail

Race Description

Hadleigh Country Park earned its place on the sporting map as the venue for the cross-country mountain bike events at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and the Hadleigh Legacy 10k trades on that same demanding terrain. This is a single-lap trail race across the grass, footpaths and packed dirt tracks that fold around the Olympic legacy course, with Hadleigh Castle's medieval ruins and the wide sweep of the Thames Estuary visible from the higher ground. With roughly 234 metres of climbing packed into just over ten kilometres, it is one of the hillier 10ks in Essex - there is barely a flat stretch, and after wet weather the mud adds another layer of difficulty.

That reputation has made it something of a cult favourite among runners who want a genuine off-road test rather than a fast time, and the race has developed a habit of selling out well before race day. It suits someone after a proper trail challenge and a scenic day out more than a PB chase: tired legs, muddy shoes and views worth the effort, rather than a flat blast to a new personal best. Two water stations - one at halfway, one at the finish - help runners manage the exposed, undulating course, and the country park setting means parking and facilities are close at hand on Chapel Lane.

For club runners and regular trail racers in South Essex it has become something of an early-season rite of passage, a chance to test winter training on a course that punishes anyone who goes off too fast on the opening climbs.
