Race Description

Run from the South Downs village of Firle by 1066 Trail Races, this is a genuine out-and-back 5k along the Old Coach Road track towards Alfriston - three sharp climbs and around 30 metres of climbing packed into the five kilometres, on a course that's roughly 85% trail rather than road. It's part of a small, informal annual series of handicap trail races the club runs through the summer and autumn around the Sussex/1066 Country area, with the Firle leg typically run late in the season.

The defining feature is the handicap format itself: rather than everyone starting together, runners set off in staggered waves based on ability, slowest first and fastest last, so that in theory the whole field could cross the line together and anyone genuinely has a shot at "winning" if they beat their own handicap rating on the day - a different kind of race than chasing a flat-course PB. The inaugural running drew a field of around 30 runners and came down to a sprint finish between closely-matched competitors despite the staggered start, which says a lot about how well the format works in practice.

It suits club and social trail runners more than serious time-chasers - the appeal here is the tactical, everyone's-in-with-a-chance nature of a handicap race and Firle's South Downs scenery, not a fast, record-eligible 5k time. A 10am start and a short, sociable distance make it an easy one to fit into a weekend along with the rest of the 1066 Trail Races calendar.
