Held on the outskirts of Crowborough in East Sussex, the 5K is the newer, shorter companion to the town's well-established 10K, and has quickly built a following of its own since it was introduced. Both races start together from Beacon Academy on North Beeches Road, giving the whole morning a proper event-day feel from the outset.
The 5K covers a single lap of the same tarmac lanes used by the 10K's two-lap route, winding through the pretty countryside surrounding the town. It's an accurately measured course with a genuine mix of terrain — a downhill start gets things moving quickly, before some undulating sections test the legs, with a flat run-in to the finish rewarding anyone who's paced it sensibly. Open to runners aged 11 and up, it works well as an accessible introduction to road racing for younger or newer runners, without being so flat and easy that it lacks any character.
Organised by Crowborough Runners, a club with three decades of experience putting on the 10K, the event benefits from that long-standing know-how — everything from parking to marshalling is well handled, and the atmosphere on the day is consistently warm and welcoming. Every finisher receives a bespoke medal, and there's genuinely excellent finish-line hospitality, with cakes on offer for anyone who's earned a treat after crossing the line.
A great option for runners looking to dip a toe into competitive road racing, or for more experienced runners wanting a shorter, sharper test alongside friends or family tackling the longer distance on the same morning.
