The Colchester Half Marathon starts and finishes on United Way outside the JobServe Community Stadium, home of Colchester United FC, and takes runners on a single loop out through the city and into the surrounding Essex countryside. The early miles run under a rolling road closure through Colchester itself, England's oldest recorded town, before the route opens out onto quieter country roads for the back half, a shift in character that gives the race a genuine there-and-back feel rather than the repeated laps common to many stadium-based half marathons. With roughly 126 metres of climbing spread across the full distance, it's not pancake flat, but nor is it a hilly slog: the terrain is better described as gently rolling, enough to test pacing without derailing a PB attempt, particularly given the traffic-free early miles.
Held in early March, it tends to attract runners using it as a spring tune-up ahead of the marathon season, alongside plenty of first-time half marathon finishers drawn by the free parking and straightforward stadium logistics, with several Park & Ride options laid on for race day. The event supports the Robin Cancer Trust, a charity focused on raising awareness of cancers affecting young people, and has built a reputation locally as a well-run, community-backed alternative to bigger-city half marathons, with the football stadium setting giving the start and finish a bit more atmosphere than a typical car park or school field.
