Race Description

Organised by the Rotary Club of Colchester and run every May, the Colchester 10k starts and finishes on Abbey Field, a broad expanse of open grassland just south of the town centre that once formed part of the Colchester Garrison and still sits within its grounds. The course makes the most of that setting, threading along the level Circular Road North before following a mix of roads, pavements and parkland tracks around the garrison area, with the terrain staying largely flat save for a few gentle rises as runners approach the finish.

It's a UKA-certified, marshalled course with an appointed adjudicator, so times are properly recognised, and the wide, quiet garrison roads mean it avoids the traffic hassle of a town-centre race while still feeling like a genuine club-standard event, which suits both PB-hunters and those simply after a well-organised local 10k. Abbey Field itself has a long military history, having served as a parade and exercise ground for Colchester's garrison since the Victorian era, and its scale means there's ample free parking right by the start, along with toilets and bag storage, none of which is a given at smaller races.

Two water stations along the route offer some reassurance on a warmer May morning. As one of Colchester's established running fixtures, backed by Rotary volunteers rather than a commercial promoter, it has the feel of a race built by and for the local running community, with an emphasis on a fair, accurately measured course over frills.
