Where the Clacton 10k gives you one lap of the seafront, the Clacton Half Marathon asks for two, tracing the same route along the upper and lower promenades on this stretch of the Essex coast. It starts and finishes on the Greensward opposite Fourth Avenue, timed to coincide with the town's Clacton Carnival, so the pavements tend to be busier than your average half marathon course, full of day trippers and carnival-goers rather than the usual thin scattering of dog walkers. The route is about as flat as British half marathons get, on tarmac and concrete throughout, with only a gentle incline and matching descent on each lap where the course shifts between promenade levels, and no real hills to speak of otherwise.
That combination of flat ground, sea air and repeated laps, which means you always know roughly how far there is to go, makes it a genuinely good option for runners chasing a half marathon PB, as well as for anyone tackling the distance for the first time and wanting a course without any nasty surprises. The sea is in view for almost the entire 13.1 miles, which keeps things visually interesting even on the second lap, and the promenade setting means there's little traffic to worry about.
As with the 10k run alongside it, finishers get a bespoke medal, and the event includes free photography and post-race massage, small touches that add up on a race weekend built as much around town carnival spirit as serious competition.
