The Clacton 10K sends runners out along the Essex coast as part of the town's long-running Clacton Carnival, starting and finishing on the Greensward opposite Fourth Avenue with the whole route confined to the seafront's upper and lower promenades. It's about as sea-adjacent as a 10k gets: for the full distance you're never more than a few strides from the water, running past beach huts, arcades and whatever holidaymakers happen to be around on carnival weekend, who tend to make for enthusiastic, if slightly bemused, spectators.
The course is mostly flat tarmac and concrete with a couple of short rises where the route dips between the two promenade levels, giving just enough texture to keep it interesting without threatening PB ambitions, which makes it a sensible target for both newer runners wanting a manageable first 10k and quicker club runners looking for a fast time on a calm, largely traffic-free surface. Because it shares its course, start and finish with the Clacton Half Marathon, with 10k runners completing a single lap where half marathon entrants do two, there's a good club and family atmosphere, with plenty of encouragement to spare for whichever distance you're running.
Finishers get a bespoke medal and the event throws in extras that a lot of small seaside races skip, including free event photography and post-race sports massages. Combine that with free parking near the Greensward and the general seaside-holiday buzz of Carnival weekend, and it adds up to a relaxed, sociable coastal 10k rather than a serious championship test.
