Race Description

Chelmsford has only been a city since 2012, when it was awarded the title as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee honours, and its marathon and half marathon make good use of the contrast that status implies, starting among the tree-lined avenues of Central Park before threading out past the historic high street and Shire Hall into genuinely rural Essex lanes. The half marathon runs as a single out-and-back route past Chelmer Village and on toward Writtle, home to the well-known agricultural college, before threading the villages of Roxwell and Willingale and turning back for Central Park; the full marathon extends the same idea further into the surrounding countryside.

Both courses are undulating rather than flat, mixing town streets with the kind of quiet lane running that makes rural Essex an underrated destination for road racing, and eight aid stations across the route reflect an event built with a generous six-hour cut-off in mind, welcoming a wide range of finishing times. Proceeds support Little Havens, the children's hospice serving Essex families, giving the race a clear local cause behind the finisher medal.
