Race Description

Few races in the South East carry the pedigree of the Benfleet 15, a fixture organised by Benfleet Running Club since the early 1990s that now regularly draws well over 800 finishers to Hadleigh Country Park. The multi-terrain, single-lap course is properly demanding: roots, rocks and uneven ground across the undulating Hadleigh Downs, with a stretch along the sea wall by Benfleet and Canvey Island giving legs a brief flat respite before the climb back into the park. Hadleigh Country Park has a double claim to fame: it hosted the mountain bike events at the London 2012 Olympics, and the ruined Hadleigh Castle at its edge, overlooking the Thames Estuary, was painted by John Constable in one of his most admired later works.

Among Benfleet regulars, breaking 90 minutes for the 15 miles is treated as a genuine badge of honour, something achieved only a handful of times across the race's long history, which tells you plenty about how the terrain and January conditions typically combine to slow times down. This is very much a race for experienced trail and club runners rather than 15-mile debutants: the footing demands concentration throughout, and the winter timing often adds mud and wind to the equation.

For anyone who enjoys a proper, old-school cross-country test with genuine history behind it, both the race's own and the landscape it crosses, the Benfleet 15 remains one of Essex's toughest and most respected outings.
