Race Description

Sharing its home with the shorter Bedgebury 10 & 5 Mile earlier in the year, this October fixture takes runners deeper into the same forest on a longer test: two laps of an extended loop for the half marathon, a single circuit for the 10K, both threading through Bedgebury's internationally significant pinetum, home to one of the largest and most complete conifer collections anywhere in the world. Autumn timing means runners get the forest at its most atmospheric, low light through the canopy, the first drop in temperature after summer, and paths carpeted with fallen needles rather than the mud that plagues many woodland races later in winter.

The course is entirely traffic-free, following Forestry England's network of undulating trails and bridleways rather than road, which makes it a genuinely peaceful alternative to a town-centre half marathon, though the rolling terrain means it isn't built for record times. It suits runners looking for a scenic, low-stress half marathon as part of autumn marathon training, or anyone who prefers trail underfoot to tarmac but doesn't want the technicality of a hillier, rootier course. As with its sister race, entry includes forest vehicle admission, and a junior race opens the morning.

Between the pinetum's rare trees, the well-maintained trail network and the traffic-free running, it's a course that rewards runners who'd rather spend two hours somewhere genuinely beautiful than chase a flat PB, while still offering enough distance and undulation to count as solid half marathon training.
