Beckley 10K, staged each autumn by the tiny East Sussex village of Beckley just outside Rye, is a good example of a race that punches well above its size. Now well past its twentieth running, it's a single-lap course out through quiet country lanes surrounding the village, with the 5K peeling away from the 10K route at around the two-kilometre mark before both rejoin for a shared finish. Don't let the rural setting fool you into expecting an easy ride: the course takes in a couple of genuinely testing climbs, but the reward is a long downhill stretch into the finish that gives tired legs a real lift.
Beckley sits just inland from Rye, one of England's best-preserved medieval Cinque Port towns, and the surrounding High Weald countryside gives the race a proper rural Sussex character, all hedgerows and working farmland, without the traffic-management headaches of a bigger town course. What sets it apart from a generic village 10K is where the money goes: entry fees and donations fund the Beckley Village Centre, so runners are directly supporting the hall and grounds the event is itself based at, a nice closed loop of community benefit.
It suits runners looking for a proper test of a hilly course without heading into the more remote Sussex Downs, and its longevity says a lot about the loyalty it commands locally. A junior run adds a family element to race morning.
