Run on a Friday evening in June, the Charing 10k has built a reputation as one of Kent's most sociable summer races, the kind of event where marshals know runners by name and the finish line doubles as a village get-together. The single-lap course sets off from Charing Playing Fields and loops out along quiet country lanes, picking up a stretch of the ancient Pilgrims' Way, the route immortalised by Chaucer's pilgrims heading for Canterbury, before returning through the village beneath the ruins of the old Archbishop's Palace, where Henry VIII himself once stayed.
The terrain is mostly flat to gently undulating, but a genuinely tough climb around the four-to-five kilometre mark catches out anyone who's gone off too fast; from there it's largely flat or downhill to the line, leaving real scope for a strong finish once the hill is behind you. Ashford Striders keep entry welcoming rather than elite-focused: there's no cut-off time, and a non-chip-timed junior race runs alongside so families can make an evening of it. With warm June light, closed lanes and a fast concluding stretch, it suits both PB-hunters who like a course with just enough bite to make the effort worthwhile, and newer or slower runners who want a supportive atmosphere without pressure.
Add in North Downs scenery and a proper English village setting, and it's a strong choice for anyone wanting summer racing away from the coast.
