Race Description

The shorter option in Nice Work's January Ashdown Forest Winter Challenge, run on the private Pippingford Park estate on the edge of Ashdown Forest - the East Sussex heath best known as the real Hundred Acre Wood of A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories. The 5 mile is a single lap of the same hard-packed trail course that 10 mile runners cover twice, with roughly half the climbing of the longer race - in the region of 780ft over the one lap - so it keeps the undulating character and Downs views of the full event without the accumulated fatigue of a second lap.

Like the 10 mile, it offers cash prizes for podium finishers, a bespoke medal, and free parking at the estate. As a January event it suits runners wanting a shorter, still-challenging winter trail outing rather than a flat PB course, including those newer to off-road racing who aren't ready for the two-lap 10 mile. The historic, literary setting and estate parkland give it a different feel to a typical winter road 5k or 10k, appealing to runners who want scenery and a bit of climbing alongside their winter mileage.
