Race Description

The Arthur Whiston 5 is one of the newer additions to the Essex racing calendar, launched in 2025 by Colchester Harriers in tribute to a club member who died suddenly the previous year, with proceeds going to Essex Wildlife Trust, a cause close to his heart. Starting and finishing at Colchester Garrison Track, the route heads out past the walls and history of one of Britain's oldest recorded towns before threading through quieter roads and footpaths on the town's fringes. With only a modest 43 metres of climb spread across five miles, it's a course built for effort rather than survival: mostly flat, largely on tarmac, and popular with runners chasing a summer personal best before the cross-country season resets the clock.

Its debut year drew around 250 finishers and raised over two thousand pounds for wildlife causes, and organisers have since folded it into the Essex County Road Running Grand Prix and county five-mile championship, which should sharpen the field as the race beds in. For visitors, the Garrison setting is worth lingering in afterwards; Colchester's military and Roman history run deep, and the surrounding streets reward a wander once the race numbers come off. This is very much a club race in spirit: friendly, well marshalled, and clearly run by people who cared about the person it's named for.

It suits anyone wanting a fast, sociable five-miler without a huge travel commitment, and it's an easy one to recommend to newer racers curious about grand-prix competition without the intimidation factor of a bigger city event.
